WISSA 2010 - the 30th year!

It is hard to believe that it has been thirty years already! From the humble beginnings of home made windsurfing sleds sailing on snow and ice, to the multifaceted international organization that has evolved, it has been quite a journey. “Back in the Day” as it is said, the windsurfing rig powered “Open Class” was the only category - a mosaic of international ideas. It has always been a requirement that representatives from at least five countries compete - always ensuring diversity - but the changes brought about by wings and kites were an unexpected delight. Now it is common for kites to out number the other two classes combined.

In retrospect, the more easily transported wings and kites came along just in time. The cost of traveling overseas with a full windsurfing kit plus a sled and winter clothing has become very expensive indeed. To compensate, wissa friends are lending gear to visiting sailors from overseas. Any North American sailors with available windsurfing gear for 2010 are hereby invited to step up.

The increased travel restrictions have cut into everyone - even those traveling with just skis and kites or wings - hence the policy that takes the championships across the Atlantic each year.

This year’s event will also be the final leg of the Coup de Quebec series of kite races. As a result, the Open and Wing Classes are apt to play a diminished role when compared to last year’s event in Riga, Latvia. Furthermore, the Short Track Slalom [STS] portion of the event will be in Europe this year in accordance with what is most practical.

Each year is different. Every event has the flavor of the local culture, and the pride of the host country is always evident. The experience of participating in a WISSA event is hard to describe. It is the Olympics of ice and snow sailing.

The WISSA W.C is the oldest continually run race in the history of windsurfing - a putative water sport. It is the only international racing venue for wings and all types of hand held sails, and until proven otherwise, the oldest international race for kites [ comments are welcome about this].

We hope that you will join us in Saguenay. Race or relax. Come see the beauty of this remarkable region. Celebrate the brilliant majesty of late winter, and taste the distinctive culture of “les bluets” as they are known. The warm hospitality, customs and culture of this region are unlike any other.

Government of Canada Invests $60,958 in 30th Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship

Not bad, eh?

SAINT-GÉDÉON, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 2, 2010) − The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $60,958 in non-repayable funding to Zone Turbulence for the 30th edition of the World Ice and Snow Sailing Association's (WISSA) Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean. Granted through the Community Futures program, this financial assistance will serve to help the organization promote the competition on foreign markets.

"Saint-Gédéon can be rightfully proud of playing host to the 30th Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship. This prestigious event—which draws a wide following—is an ideal opportunity to showcase the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region beyond our borders. This Zone Turbulence project is sure to further the development of winter tourism in the region, which is why Canada Economic Development is pleased to lend its financial support to the event," explained the Minister of State.

Hundreds of spectators and visitors, many of them from outside the province, are expected to attend the competition, generating an increase in winter tourism traffic that will benefit the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean economy as a whole.

Established in April 2009, Zone Turbulence is a non-profit organization that groups together several regional associations active in the wind sports sector. The organization's mission is to promote wind-powered sports. This year marks the first time that the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region will be hosting the world championship, which runs from February 26 to March 7 in Saint-Gédéon.

Minister of State Lebel wishes the best of luck to all participants of the 30th Ice and Snow Sailing World Championship and is hopeful that the event will be held again in the region. "This competition is a great opportunity for our young ice surfers to take on an exciting new challenge and stretch their limits," he concluded.

Baie Des Ha!Ha! Closed.

Here is what I found:

To all the participants of the Québec cup or the 30th WISSA competition that will take place in Saguenay from the 26th of February to the 7th of March 2010.
On Friday February 19th, municipal and governmental authorities closed the Baie des Ha! Ha! for various considerations . All activity on the Baie des Ha !Ha ! has been prohibited including snowkite. Fortunately, the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean offers many other excellent locations with amazing slidding conditions. All races will take place in different locations and all of the programmed activities will be maintained. For the moment to continue reserving your rooms at the hostels that were suggested. A bus service will be provided free of charge that will transport all competitors to the race sites. All activities will take place at the hostels as originally planned, and all information will circulate at these locations. We suggest that all competitors follow the evolution of the situation on our website and sign up to our newsletter. As of Tuesday new information will be posted on the website.

And here is the explanation:

Ice fishing is over on the Baie des Ha! Ha! this winter. Mild weather, the huge cracks in the ice and water on sites forced Fisheries and Oceans Canada to order the end of the season. The 1,400 cabins located in L'Anse-à-Benjamin and in the area of Great Bay had to be removed Monday. The operation began Saturday morning. The President of the Association of white peach of Great Bay, Richard Lavoie, had expressed doubts however about the possibility that all the cabins can be removed on Monday. He hoped that the ice bridges would take the blow. The municipal police of Saguenay has assigned additional officers this weekend in the Bay district. The fishing season was to end next March 12.

Zhigulevskoe More 010 Marathon and Championship of Russia Feb 8th

Press release by Aleksey Razhev and Elena Kocheva

Our contests came to a close on the 6th of February. Sunday’s forecast was rather poor, so the organizers decided to carry out only marathon and freestyle, because there wasn’t enough wind for slalom. The second marathon race in “kite skis” and “kite snowboard” classes (for windsurfers it was the first one) lay along the same distance as the day before.
By the starting time the temperature was 15 degrees below zero, the wind was northerly of 2-4 mps. Passing the first checkpoint of the way was quite easy for all the competitors. Then on the tack section the Volga wind drifted lots of surprises. At the moment it faded, at another became stronger again on different sections, this “northerly fellow” tested pilots’ skills of changing fast the tactical race pattern. Isn’t it hard to ride among leaders and especially to lead them! The racing avant-garde first faced the wind holes, and those who followed got very useful pieces of information for changing tacks opportunely. Another useful skill for riders is the ability to move forward with total lack of wind using skating stride. Though some competitors were not skilled enough to struggle with calm, and the rescue group evacuated them only in early twilight. The marathon started at 12:23 and ended at 15:19.

Marathon. Second race.

Winter windsurfing
1 placement – Evgeny Mitrofanov (Monchegorsk)
2 placement – Valentin Drobyshevsky (Murmansk)
3 placement – Dmitriy Samoilov (Tumen’)

Kite skis
1 placement – Dmitry Nikulichev (Petrozavodsk)
2 placement – Maksim Ignatov (Murmansk)
3 placement - Roman Lubimtsev (Sankt-Petersburg)

Kite snowboard
1 placement - Aleksey Pavlov (Yaroslavl)
2 placement – Kamil’ Khuzin (Naberezhnye Chelny)
3 placement – Igor Zakhartsev (Samara)

Freestylers were about to carry out all “double” (Double elimination system). It was short of nearly 10 minutes for snowboarders to run the final heat because Nikolai Rakhmatov and Alexander Gryanik were taken up with their duel. There still remained a hope of the wind to become stronger on Sunday.
According to specialized weather forecast site windguru.cz, on Sunday we were waiting for south wind of 2 mps. Usually in the Championship venue forecasts are confirmed, and it really blows on 4-5 mps! That’s why the Racing Committee was buying time to the last in the hope of showy contests final. But the wing appeared at nearly 5 pm only when competitors were about to depart.
Award ceremony was held in bar-restaurant “Zhara” (“Heat”), an official partner of the Championship. Participants greeted everybody who walked up the stage for being awarded with medals, certificates, and worth prizes. By the way, the prize fund of contests in terms of hard cash was 400 000 rubles. Triumpher of the day was master Aleksey Pavlov from Yaroslavl – he walked up the stage for getting 1st placement medal four times! Aleksey won in kite-snowboard class in all kinds of programs and was the best of masters. The big event of award ceremony was the draw game b/n competitors in kite-skis class of a pair of superb freeride skis granted by Michael Kaspar. The treasured gift came to young competitor Aleksey Galiev from Nadym.
Right away the ceremony sportsmen hastily departed because of Monday’s work or study. Let’s point out that according to the results of the contests first five sportsmen in every nomination can submit documents for conferment as a Master of sport of Russia, and those who took placements from 6 to 9 – for conferment as Candidate in masters of sport.
As specified, in the Championship took part 142 sportsmen at the age of 15 to 54, 4 of them are from Ukraine, 1 from Belarus, 1 from Switzerland. In course race competed 119 riders, in marathon – 122, in freestyle – 22.
По результатам опросов участников многие уже запланировали себе на зимний сезон 2010-2011 поездку на «Жигулёвское Море-011», на Марафон, который ещё никто не выигрывал дважды. Что ж, пора начинать подготовку!
According to participants survey, many of them have already planned to take part in “Zhigulevskoe More-011” in winter season 2010-2011, take part in Marathon in which nobody had won twice. Well, it’s time to start training!

US Team Will Train on Lake Sunapee for WISSA Championships

Posted on January 28, 2010 by Sunapee News

Sailing Lake Sunapee at a speed of 50 mph.

Photo and Post by William Tuthill

The rain on Monday has resurfaced the big NH lakes, and fast ice will be the rule of the day this weekend on Sunapee. As we train for the Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships this year- the 30th-we will have our minds on what it will be like in Saguenay, Quebec, site of this year’s event. The conditions on the lake this weekend will be similar to those encountered at last year’s WC in Riga, Latvia. Fast, and unforgiving for those who do not wax carefully. I may use blades from the Nordic Skater, a great local resource in nearby Norwich, VT, just across the bridge from Dartmouth. With blades [assuming that they are high enough to escape the drag on new snow] wax is not a factor. Thursday’s predicted snow will tell the tale. In any case, as the WC draws closer the U.S. Team will assemble on Sunapee and continue training.

WISSA 2010: Fresh information!

In addition to three traditional races (course, speed, marathon) and Quebec Cup in freestyle there will be a

SHORT TRACK SLALOM!

This kind of race is getting more and more popular and becoming the most attractive show of all.

Dare to try?

WISSA 2010: Q&A

I have recently received some questions at kiteforum.com about up coming competition.

Here they are with the answers from Will and Ben in my interpretation.

The rules indicate all events are stand up

True, this is stated to forbid any kinds of ice boats in the competition. They are generally faster and very unsafe when combined with any of the "stand-up" classes.

I hope I can be allowed to enter events.

In previous Championships there were always 2-3 competitors on some curious devices that would not fit into any of the class. In such cases it was always up to the Racing Committee to decide which class to put them in and if they are scored or not. I have forwarded your question to the Organizers in Quebec and will update you here. In any case no one coming was ever disappointed! :)

Is the main area of activity in front of the lodge with the ski resort behind it?

I have no idea, frankly. This is a new race spot, I have never been there. There is some kind of ski resort near by but you better consult wit the locals (I have posted your question to them but you are welcome to ask directly, all contact info is here.

Will there be any kind of a real freestyle - competition or will it be only for attraction and the main thing will be racing?

Freestyle noted for Feb.26-27 is not part of WISSA competition but a local event which welcomes WISSA competitors to join in. I do not know if this event is a a real competition or just fun.

The official disciplines for WISSA 2010 as declared by the organizers are:

1. Course race (up to 12 runs)
2. Speed trials (up to 3 runs)
3. Marathon.

All of those are dependent on the weather and ice/snow conditions and may be reviewed, modified and extended by the organizers. It seems that freestyle is suitable only to the kiter's class and the rest of the disciplines are common to all WISSA classes. However nothing forbids the organizers to have WISSA 2010 Freestyle World Championship if they choose to.

According to the reply I've got from the Ben, the freestyle event will be a stage of the 19th Open Cup of Quebec. It coincides with WISSA 2010 and run by the same people. Everyone is welcome to take part in Quebec Cup which final stage will happen a couple weeks after WISSA 2010 at Deux Montagnes lake near Montréal.
